The Valve team is constantly enhancing Steam, and the latest addition is the family group feature that combines new and existing options. This feature, which was tested in beta starting in March, will now replace Steam Family Sharing and the family viewing feature.
A family group can include up to six members from the same country, ensuring a cohesive gaming experience.
One exciting aspect of this new feature is that each member can create their own saves and earn achievements independently. Developers still have control over whether their games can be shared within a family group.
Valve has implemented restrictions to prevent frequent switching between groups:
- Adult members have limitations on leaving and joining groups to promote stability.
- Children require adult approval or Steam support to
leave a group.
- Vacant spots in family groups are only available for filling after a year due to infrequent changes in membership.
Parents benefit from features like parental controls for managing gaming time and available titles for children. Children’s accounts now have the ability to request purchases from their cart with approval options via email or mobile device.
