Bethesda’s upcoming space ARPG Starfield is set to launch in just a couple of months. The recent Starfield Direct showcased the incredible amount of options that the game will have for encouraging players to customize their ships. As a space-focused adventure, it is understandable that a character’s ship will become a major hub for them throughout the game. Developers want players to use their imaginations and be able to craft their spaceship into pretty much whatever they would like.
Starfield seems to be on track to be a massive game from the sounds of everything that developers have announced so far. Including thousands of lines of NPC dialog, hundreds of planets to visit, and now customizable ships, there will be plenty for players to enjoy in this game. Coming from the makers of Skyrim, this should not come as too much of a surprise that Starfield is a large endeavor, and the plethora of content shown so far is encouraging.
Starfield players can purchase a ship from several options at the vendor that they can customize and upgrade. Individual systems such as weapons and shields can be easily upgraded, or players can take it a step further by entering the Shipbuilder mode. In the Shipbuilder mode, players can customize the systems, look, and layout of several aspects of their ships and even add new pieces easily. Some pieces may be for cosmetic reasons, but many can help with the overall function of the ship for speed or longer space jumps. Everything that is added or removed on the outside of the ship will not only change stats but also affects the interior.
Besides changing parts and pieces of the ship, players can also customize them with an array of color choices. Whether someone wants to go traditional with a stealthy and sleek look or make it bright and colorful, the options are there to play with. Developers want the ships themselves to be fun for players and made it so that creativity can run wild with ship design. Game producer Jamie Mallory stated during the Starfield Direct that she enjoys making her ships look like animals, such as her HMS Platypus ship, and said the team has made ships that look like a variety of things such as mechs and spiders.
Starfield promises to provide players with countless hours of entertainment with a vast number of planets to discover, contacts to be made, NPC side quests and dialog, and customization options. It will be interesting to see what creative varieties of ships the community of gamers makes with the tools that Bethesda is giving them in the game. So far, Starfield will be single-player only so player-made creations will not be visible in a multiplayer setting. Starfield is currently set to be released on September 6, 2023, for Xbox Series X/S and Windows PC.
