According to research conducted by communications company Fenimore Harper, Facebook was inundated with fake advertisements featuring a deepfaked Rishi Sunak ahead of the UK’s general election expected to take place this year. Last month, the firm discovered 143 different ads impersonating the UK’s Prime Minister on the social network, with an estimated reach of over 400,000 people. The funding for these ads originated from 23 countries, including Turkey, Malaysia, the Philippines, and the United States. From December 8, 2023, to January 8, 2024, a total of $16,500 was spent to promote them.
