The British government has announced the expulsion of Russia’s defense attache amidst allegations of espionage, part of a series of actions aimed at disrupting Moscow’s intelligence operations in the United Kingdom.
Home Secretary James Cleverly emphasized that these measures are a response to what he described as the “reckless and perilous actions of the Russian government in Europe.”
The latest steps will see the removal of Maxim Elovik, a Russian colonel identified as an “undeclared military intelligence officer.” Additionally, diplomatic status will be revoked from Russian-owned properties suspected of being used for intelligence activities, and new restrictions will be imposed on Russian diplomatic visas and visits.
Cleverly warned of expected accusations of Russophobia and conspiracy theories from the Russian government, stating that the British people will not be deceived by such tactics.
In response, the Russian embassy in London criticized the restrictions as baseless and absurd, promising a suitable retaliation.
Relations between the UK and Russia have been strained for years due to allegations of targeted killings, espionage, and cyberattacks on British officials. The UK has also taken action against wealthy Russians and money laundering activities in London.
The government’s actions come in the wake of criminal cases in London involving espionage and sabotage linked to Russia.
