The UK government is taking a strong stance against disposable vapes, aiming to prevent companies from finding loopholes to bypass the upcoming ban. Health Secretary Victoria Atkins has announced that the legislation will be carefully crafted with the help of experts to anticipate and eliminate potential ruses.
The motivation behind this move is to protect children and young people from nicotine addiction, which disposable vapes can easily lead to. The government is also planning to make vaping less appealing to children by restricting sweet and fruity flavors, introducing plain packaging, and making displays less visible in shops.
While the ban is expected to come into effect towards the end of this year or in early 2025, the government is also mindful of the impact on the industry and is seeking a balance between curbing the use of vapes by children and young people without overly affecting their availability to adult smokers who use them as a tool to quit tobacco.
The move is part of a wider response to a public consultation on smoking and vaping, which has resulted in plans for some of the world’s toughest anti-smoking measures. The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health has welcomed the announcement, which follows its campaign.
