The 235th Garrison Military Court in Moscow has handed down a severe sentence to two former members of the FSB Second Service for corruption involving the Roman Catholic Church. Yevgenia Lobanova and Denis Karmanov were sentenced to 9 years in a strict regime colony for accepting large bribes, as reported by “Kommersant”.
In addition to bribery charges, Karmanov was also convicted of illegal possession of weapons and ammunition. The court stripped them of their colonel ranks and imposed a hefty fine on each of them. The investigation revealed that they extorted bribes from representatives of the Roman Catholic Church for protection within the legal system.
The FSB employees received nearly 20 million rubles in bribes from priests, using their official positions to manipulate cases involving the Catholic Church. While there were multiple cases in the arbitration database, it remains unclear how exactly they assisted or promised assistance to the church.
