Hundreds of Pokémon from prior generations will appear in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet over the next few months, including two perennial fan favorites. That’s mostly due to the two parts of Scarlet and Violet’s DLC - The Teal Mask and The Indigo Disk – slated for release in the fall and winter of 2023. Between the two of them, these expansions will add over 230 classic Pokémon to the latest games in the series, along with a handful of new ones. However, players don’t have to buy the DLC to claim a certain pair of old-school Pokémon.
Pokémon Scarlet and Violet (along with Sword and Shield) caught a lot of flak for its incomplete Pokédex, which left out large swathes of the original roster in favor of introducing new Pokémon. While these latest additions may not fill out the entire National Dex, they do go a long way toward completing it. It’s somewhat disappointing that most of these new Pokémon are locked behind the purchase of DLC, but thankfully, two of the best ones are available absolutely free to those willing to put in a little effort.
Getting Mew in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet is as easy as can be: all players have to do is navigate to the Mystery Gift menu, select “Get with Code/Password,” and type in “GETYOURMEW.” All Mews granted through this code will have a random nature, move set, and Tera type, which should make for some interesting combinations. This promotion lasts until September 18, 2023, and is completely free.
Getting Mewtwo, though, is a little more complicated. Mewtwo will appear in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet as a Tera Raid battle event, a limited-time challenge that begins on September 1, 2023, and lasts until September 17. After this battle, players can catch a Mewtwo with the rare Mightiest Mark. There’s also a special surprise for trainers who bring Mew along on their Pokémon team when challenging Mewtwo’s Tera Raid, so it’s worth claiming and training the free Mew as soon as possible.
Both Mew and Mewtwo are versatile and powerful Pokémon with fascinating lore implications, so they’re worth catching. They’re also both completely free to those who already own the game, so there’s truly no reason not to pick up the free Mew. Even though it takes a little more effort to get both, though, Mew and Mewtwo are worthy additions to anyone’s Pokémon Scarlet and Violet team.
