Turkey initiates airstrikes against Kurdish rebels in Iraq and Syria

Turkey ⁤has conducted airstrikes ⁢on multiple locations allegedly connected to Kurdish groups in Syria and northern Iraq as a response to the deaths of nine Turkish soldiers in Iraq, according to the defense ministry.

The airstrikes took place on Saturday, following an attack on a Turkish military base in Iraq that resulted in the soldiers’ fatalities.

The ministry⁣ stated that the attacks targeted 29⁢ locations, including “caves, bunkers, shelters, and oil installations” belonging to the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ ⁤Party (PKK) and ‍the ‌People’s Protection Units (YPG), a Syrian Kurdish group that has played a significant role in the US-allied coalition against ISIS (ISIL).

Turkey frequently carries out attacks on suspected PKK-associated locations in Syria and Iraq.

The PKK, a Kurdish separatist group banned in Turkey, is considered ‍a “terror” organization by Turkey, the European Union, and ⁤the United States.
