Turkey has conducted airstrikes on multiple locations allegedly connected to Kurdish groups in Syria and northern Iraq as a response to the deaths of nine Turkish soldiers in Iraq, according to the defense ministry.
The airstrikes took place on Saturday, following an attack on a Turkish military base in Iraq that resulted in the soldiers’ fatalities.
The ministry stated that the attacks targeted 29 locations, including “caves, bunkers, shelters, and oil installations” belonging to the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and the People’s Protection Units (YPG), a Syrian Kurdish group that has played a significant role in the US-allied coalition against ISIS (ISIL).
Turkey frequently carries out attacks on suspected PKK-associated locations in Syria and Iraq.
The PKK, a Kurdish separatist group banned in Turkey, is considered a “terror” organization by Turkey, the European Union, and the United States.
