Israeli forces have carried out deadly attacks in Gaza, resulting in the deaths of at least five journalists within the past 24 hours. The bombings and air strikes in the besieged enclave have escalated, causing devastation.
Reports from Gaza’s Government Media Office indicate that three journalists were killed in the Nuseirat refugee camp, while two others lost their lives in Gaza City. This brings the total number of media workers killed since the beginning of the conflict on October 7 to at least 158.
The victims in Nuseirat were identified as Amjad Jahjouh and Rizq Abu Ashkian from the Palestine Media Agency, and Wafa Abu Dabaan from the Islamic University Radio in Gaza. Abu Dabaan, who was married to Jahjouh, tragically lost their children in the same strike, as reported by Al Jazeera’s team on the ground. The attack in Nuseirat claimed the lives of at least 10 individuals.
Additionally, Palestinian journalists Saadi Madoukh and Ahmed Sukkar were killed in a separate Israeli raid on the Madoukh family home in the Daraj neighborhood of Gaza City.
Even before these recent tragic events, Israel’s offensive in Gaza had already become one of the deadliest conflicts for journalists and media personnel worldwide.
Hamza Dahdouh, an Al Jazeera journalist and the son of the network’s Gaza bureau chief, Wael Dahdouh, was among those killed in a missile strike in Khan Younis, southern Gaza. The attack occurred near al-Mawasi, an area designated as a “safe zone” by Israel, where its forces have repeatedly launched assaults. Hamza was accompanied by another journalist, Mustafa Thuraya, who also perished in the incident.
These heartbreaking incidents underscore the dangers faced by journalists in conflict zones, highlighting the urgent need for the protection of media workers worldwide.
