Tragedy struck in the Italian Alps as a professional skier and his girlfriend tragically fell over 2,000 feet to their demise while mountain climbing. The devastating incident was confirmed by FISI, Italy’s winter sports federation, labeling it as an ”accident” and a “terrible tragedy.”
Both Jean Daniel Pession and Elisa Arlian, natives of Italy, were scaling a ridge on Monte Zerbion, a familiar mountain in the Pennine Alps. Tied together as is customary in such climbs, the exact circumstances of their fall remain unknown due to their solitary presence.
Following a report of their disappearance by family members, search and rescue teams were deployed. Using specialized equipment, a helicopter was able to locate their bodies by detecting cellphone signals. Reports suggest that the couple was near the summit when the tragic incident occurred.
Elisa Arlian, a teacher in elementary school and skiing, and Jean Daniel Pession, a 28-year-old speed skier who had competed in the World Cup circuit, met their untimely end. Speed skiing involves athletes racing downhill to achieve the highest possible speed, with Pession ranking 15th globally in 2021 and 33rd in 2022.
