Although many exciting releases are expected before the year is out, it is difficult to envisage that a game could be released this year that would dethrone the likely recipient of the 2023 Game of the Year award, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. That being said, it is shaping up to be an enormously exciting year for the gaming industry, with games like Hogwarts Legacy, Diablo 4, and Dead Space already released to critical and commercial acclaim. More exciting still, many highly anticipated games are set to be released throughout the rest of the year.
Game of the Year is the ultimate prize awarded by many outlets, but arguably the most prestigious comes from the annual video game industry awards ceremony, The Game Awards. TGA’s accolade is awarded to the game, judged by a jury of experts and video game industry insiders – as well as input from a public vote – to have offered a better video game experience than any other release from that year. First awarded in 2014, previous recipients of the coveted The Game of the Year Award include The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and the most recent winner, Elden Ring.
As fighting games are rarely given Game of the Year honors, it seems unlikely that Street Fighter 6 will ultimately receive the accolade. However, in 2019 Super Smash Bros. Ultimate received a TGA nomination, so the latest installment of the Street Fighter franchise may be in with a shot. Released in June 2023, Street Fighter 6 has been lauded as among the best fighting games on the market and a return to form. It is yet to be seen if any other fighting game this year can surpass the initial critical and commercial praise leveed on Street Fighter 6.
Mortal Kombat 1 is, like the previous entry, unlikely to defeat The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and win the prestigious Game of the Year awards. Although it is perhaps controversial to place it above Street Fighter 6, the dedicated focus on story mode in Mortal Komat games likely makes Mortal Kombat 1 a more probable Game of the Year recipient. That being said, irrespective of which fighting game comes out on top in the battle of sales and reviews, 2023 is set to be an amazing year for fans of the fighting game genre.
Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is a relatively contentious game, with performance issues plaguing its launch, most prominently on PC. Although Star Wars Jedi: Survivor often falls flat in narrative and story, it does redeem itself to some degree with its characters (particularly Cal), as well as its high production value. Although its predecessor, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, was overlooked due to its mid-to-late November release, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor will almost certainly be on the long list ballot for some GOTY awards, if not a nominee for some of the more coveted, like TGA’s.
