Finding a shiny gemstone is one of the best feelings in the Zelda games, since it usually means that there’s a large profit to come, but things are slightly more complicated in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. The introduction of Link’s new Fuse ability – which allows him to embed weapons, shields, and even arrows with jewels – may leave players questioning whether they’re really getting their bang for their buck by selling gems, or whether it’s better to keep them around for combat purposes.
After all, capitalism has ruined even Tears of the Kingdom, and Link will already have a more difficult time making Rupees than he did previously. Most gemstones only fetch for a fraction of their original price in Breath of the Wild, and so players will have to work extra hard in the mines, on the battlefield, or next to the cooking pot in order to generate a profit. With the economy all askew, it can be more confusing than ever before to know what the best use of gems is in TOTK.
In reality though, it’s still far better to sell gems in Tears of the Kingdom than it is to Fuse them. While it’s true that their market value has seemingly declined, it doesn’t change the fact that they’re still one of the best ways to earn Rupees, and doing so is incredibly important to Link’s success early-game. The currency can secure the Hero of Hyrule with some game-changing armor, helpful ingredients, extra arrows, and more. Meanwhile, attaching a gem to a weapon in TOTK confines it to a single, irreversible purpose – a purpose which won’t even last, thanks to the weapon durability system.
Selling gems in Tears of the Kingdom is even better if players bring their valuables to the right person. Ramella, a Gerudo woman who runs a business in Goron City, is the best vendor to sell gems to, as long as Link has managed to stock up a healthy supply. After completing the “Amber Dealer” side quest and selling 10 Amber to her for 200 Rupees, Ramella will continue to buy ores in bulk at a considerably higher price than other merchants. For example, when selling diamonds in Tears of the Kingdom, the Gerudo jeweler will purchase 10 of them for a whopping 5,500 Rupees.
While Fusing gems to weapons may be a tempting venture due to sheer novelty of it all, doing so would be to pass up on a far more profitable and practical option. It may require a bit more blood, sweat, and tears than it did in Breath of the Wild, but at the end of the day, the best use of gems in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is still to sell them.
