Over 5,300 people lost their lives and many more are still missing following devastating floods caused by the bursting of two dams in the Libyan port city of Derna. The floods resulted in the complete destruction of entire neighborhoods. In another tragic event, Morocco experienced its most severe earthquake in over a century near the city of Marrakesh, claiming the lives of at least 2,900 people. Despite international offers of aid, the government has either rejected or ignored them.
In a historic moment, all 15 Supreme Court justices of Israel convened for a case. They have started hearing petitions against a law passed in July that significantly restricts the powers of the judiciary.
To facilitate a prisoner-exchange deal, the United States waived sanctions on certain banks, allowing the transfer of $6 billion in frozen funds from South Korea to Iran. Antony Blinken, the Secretary of State, announced that Iran would release five Americans held captive. The funds can only be used by Iran for humanitarian purposes.
