Fans of the Diablo series are well acquainted with legendary equipment and all the benefits they bring, but Diablo 4‘s legendary system promises to be exceptional. While every game in the series features incredibly powerful legendary items for characters, each has its own systems and handles things slightly different. One consistency is that legendary equipment is powerful and game-changing, and Diablo 4 is no exception.
What makes the legendary items in Diablo 4 the series’ best yet are Occultists, in-game vendors that can customize legendary equipment. Diablo 4 is very focused on player choice, and this extends to the game’s most powerful items. This means that Sanctuary’s newest heroes will have a choice between stronger, one-time enhancements and weaker but permanently accessible ones. Either way, legendary equipment in Diablo 4 is better than ever before.
Diablo 4’s legendary items have reached new heights because of the customization option at Occultists. These are vital NPC merchants like a Blacksmith or Stable Master, and are unlocked by completing a quest that becomes available at level 25. What’s important to getting the most out of legendary items are Occultists’ extract and imprint functions. These allow players to move a legendary aspect from one piece of gear to another, and the Codex of Power even allows players to build up a library of slightly weakened but reusable legendary aspects.
The Diablo series has featured methods of transferring legendary aspects between equipment before, such as the essence extractor in Immortal, but things work differently in Diablo 4. Namely, the Occultist offers two methods of imprinting legendary aspects on equipment, each with their own benefits. The first method involves extracting the aspects from a piece of legendary equipment. This destroys the item, but offers a more potent aspect that can be imprinted on a new item of the player’s choice at the cost of it being a one-time use. But players shouldn’t fret, because there is a second option for imprinting.
Alternatively to destroying legendary items for a one-time imprint, players can draw on Diablo 4’s Codex of Power. This is another method Occultists can use to imprint legendary aspects on equipment. The Codex of Power is a library of these amazing abilities, which players can add to by completing dungeons and defeating bosses. Legendary aspects gained through the Codex of Power are slightly weaker than their counterparts extracted from a weapon, but they are reusable and don’t rely on the classic RNG of hoping for a legendary drop with their clear unlock requirements.
