Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, welcomed his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, in Moscow. Putin supported China’s proposal for a ceasefire and negotiations in the Ukrainian war. However, the plan does not recognize Ukraine’s territorial integrity or Russia’s aggression. Western leaders and Ukraine’s President, Volodymyr Zelensky, have rejected the proposal. Meanwhile, Ukraine reported an explosion that damaged a Russian munitions train in Crimea, and Russian missiles hit Ukrainian cities, killing civilians.
A grand jury in Manhattan has reconvened to consider charges against former US President, Donald Trump. He is suspected of falsifying business records to conceal hush money paid to Stormy Daniels, whom he allegedly had an affair with in 2006. Prosecutors must prove that this facilitated a second crime of falsifying campaign expenses. The grand jury is expected to vote on whether to indict Mr. Trump in the coming days.
Nicolás Maduro, the autocratic President of Venezuela, appointed the head of PDVSA, the state oil company, as the new oil minister. Pedro Rafael Tellechea replaces Tareck El Aissami, an ally of Maduro who resigned unexpectedly this week. More than 20 PDVSA officials have been detained as part of a corruption probe. The company is reportedly owed over $21bn in unpaid bills. The probe could allow Maduro to sideline potential rivals.
