Joe Biden visited Belfast to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement. The agreement has brought peace to Northern Ireland, but implementing the politics has been challenging. The agreement requires power-sharing between unionists and nationalists, but the devolved assembly has been suspended for 40% of the time since 1998. Biden also spent three days in Ireland, his ancestral homeland.
Biden reassured America’s allies that there would be no more leaks of classified intelligence after a trove of documents was released online from an unknown source. The leaked materials revealed America’s involvement in Ukraine’s fight against Russia, including details of Ukrainian battle strengths and weapon deliveries. This was the biggest leak of top-secret information since Edward Snowden’s leak of military papers in 2013.
In Ukraine, Russia increased its bombardments in the front-line Donetsk region as the battle for control of the strategically important town of Bakhmut continued. The commander of Ukraine’s ground forces reported that the Russians had switched to “scorched earth” tactics, similar to those used in Syria to defend the Assad regime.
