The United Nations has issued a warning that up to 800,000 people may flee the fighting in Sudan between the national army and a rival paramilitary force. The conflict has resulted in the deaths of over 500 civilians, with heavy combat taking place in the capital city of Khartoum. The UN has also called for assurances from both sides that humanitarian aid will be delivered without obstruction, following the looting of six lorries carrying supplies to the Darfur region in western Sudan.
In Burkina Faso, a jihadist attack on an army post has resulted in the deaths of 33 soldiers, highlighting the deteriorating security situation in the Sahelian country. Some estimates suggest that government forces only control around 40% of the country’s territory.
Job Sikhala, a popular opposition MP in Zimbabwe, has been jailed for obstructing justice, which will prevent him from running in an election scheduled for July or August. Activists and lawyers have accused the government of using the justice system to suppress the opposition and rig the elections.
