Joe Biden has announced his campaign for re-election as president of the United States. Despite concerns from some Democrats about his age, Biden stated that America is still in a battle for its “soul” with Republican “extremists”. His announcement video replayed the violent attack on Congress by Donald Trump’s supporters in January 2021. If Mr Trump can avoid jail time before the election, he is expected to be the Republican candidate. However, polling shows that most voters do not want either man to run again.
The Supreme Court has ruled that mifepristone can continue to be sold while it faces legal challenges in lower courts. This overturned a previous ruling by a judge in Texas to stop the sale of the abortion pill, which focused on its approval in 2000 by the Food and Drug Administration. Mr Biden is expected to make abortion a key issue in the election.
Tucker Carlson, America’s most well-known right-wing pundit, was suddenly fired by Fox News. The reasons for his dismissal are unclear, but there is speculation that Fox News considered him a liability, particularly after paying $787.5m to Dominion Voting Systems for broadcasting false claims about its election machines.
