Ghostbusters: Rise of the Ghost Lord takes place in the original franchise’s timeline, but players may have difficulty determining when the game occurs if they simply start playing. The upcoming VR game, developed by nDreams, is set to release later this year for Meta Quest 2, Quest Pro, and PlayStation VR2. Rise of the Ghost Lord follows a new group of Ghostbusters as they attempt to defeat the Ghost Lord.
The Ghost Lord’s origins can be traced back to the original Ghostbusters movie. The villain is actually the corrupted form of Gustav Hookfaber, a man obsessed with the Ghostbusters who found an opportunity to continue his studies in San Francisco’s Alcatraz Prison. Ghostbusters: Rise of the Ghost Lord will likely depict Gustav’s descent into his present villainous self, and his connection to the original group allows players to estimate when the game is set in the franchise’s timeline.
After leaving New York, Ghost Lord moves to San Francisco, which he sees as a territory full of ghosts to serve as his test subjects. In Ghostbusters: Rise of the Ghost Lord, Gustav begins studying ghosts by torturing them. Even his assistant, Katie Miller, is somewhat corrupted by ghosts – but it’s uncertain if she actually died and came back as a ghost or if her form was merely altered into a more ghastly one. As Gustav descends into madness, he seeks revenge on the Ghostbusters for dismissing his research.
It is Gustav’s need for approval that ultimately transforms him into the Ghost Lord, the main antagonist that players must defeat in the new game. While it is difficult to pinpoint exactly when Ghostbusters: Rise of the Ghost Lord is set in the franchise’s timeline, it is possible to speculate that it takes place at least a few years after Gustav’s dismissal as an understudy in 1984. Ghostbusters: Rise of the Ghost Lord is set to be released in the fall, although a specific release date has not yet been announced.
