The Head of U.N. Climate Talks, an Oil Executive, Suggests His Strategy

The elimination of fossil fuel production has been a long-standing argument among scientists and activists at global climate summits as the only way to slow down global warming. However, this year’s United Nations-sponsored climate summit will be hosted in the United Arab Emirates, one of the world’s largest fossil fuel producers, with Sultan al-Jaber, the head of the U.A.E.’s national oil company, presiding over the meeting. Mr. al-Jaber will be responsible for finalizing the language of the summit’s final document, which begins in late November.

At a separate climate-focused conference in Berlin on Tuesday, Mr. al-Jaber provided some of his clearest hints yet on his hopes for the document’s content. While some of his word choices left room for ambiguity, close observers of climate politics were cautiously optimistic about Mr. al-Jaber’s ambitions, given that he is also the chairman of the U.A.E.’s state-owned renewable energy company.
