Constellation Norma
The constellation Norma is a southern celestial formation. Also known by its Latin name, Norma means “the rule” or ”the carpenter’s square,” representing a traditional tool used to measure right angles. Norma is not one of the well-known constellations, but it holds a special place in the night sky with its unique features that captivate astronomers and stargazers alike.
Located near the Milky Way, Norma lies between the constellations Scorpius and Centaurus. French astronomer Nicolas Louis de Lacaille introduced Norma in the mid-18th century, along with a dozen other constellations filling the southern sky gaps, including Fornax, Horologium, and Mensa. Norma is now recognized and officially included in the list of 88 modern constellations.
Norma does not have any bright stars and lacks prominent deep-sky objects. However, it contains a few interesting clusters and nebulae. The Norma Cluster, also known as Abell 3627, is one of the richest known galaxy clusters. It is located approximately 220 million light-years away from Earth and consists of hundreds of galaxies held together by gravity. The Norma Cluster is a fascinating subject for researchers studying large-scale structures in the universe.
Another exciting feature within Norma is the Ant Nebula (Mz 3), a planetary nebula resembling an ant. Although it is relatively faint, this nebula’s intricate shape and peculiar bi-polar structure fascinate astronomers.
