Elisabeth Kopp, the first woman elected to Switzerland’s governing Federal Council in 1984, passed away on April 7 at the age of 86 in Zumikon, southeast of Zurich. Despite overcoming accusations involving her husband, she was forced to resign a few years later due to another scandal related to him, which dashed her hopes of becoming the country’s first female president.
The federal chancellery announced her death on April 14, but did not specify the cause.
Prior to her appointment to the Federal Council, Mrs. Kopp had served as mayor of Zumikon for ten years and had completed two terms in Parliament. She was known for her work on environmental issues and for advancing women’s causes, and was one of the more left-leaning members of the conservative Radical Democratic Party. The Federal Council is made up of seven members who run the main government departments and take turns serving a one-year term as the country’s president.
