Strike layoffs by US automakers surge by over 800

Oct 9 (Reuters) – Chrysler-parent Stellantis (STLAM.MI) announced on Monday that it is laying off an additional 570 workers, while General ⁤Motors (GM.N) revealed cuts of nearly ⁢200 employees due to the ongoing United Auto ⁣Workers strike. Ford also reported ⁤that 70 more workers have been laid off in Michigan, bringing the total at the automaker to 1,865 since the strike began. Stellantis has a total of 640 workers who have been laid off. The latest layoffs at Stellantis include ‌520 at⁣ its Trenton, Michigan engine plant and 50 at an Indiana casting plant. Stellantis attributed the layoffs to storage constraints. GM has​ increased its layoffs by 200 to 2,300, affecting six plants including its Lansing, Michigan stamping plant and a Toledo, Ohio plant. GM stated that workers ⁤are not expected to ‍return until the strike is resolved. The strike began on September 15.
