Labour has voiced deep concern over Rishi Sunak’s reluctance to rule out potential cuts to the NHS or pensions, or tax hikes, to fund his £46 billion long-term plan to eliminate national insurance. Following PMQs, Pat McFadden, the party’s national campaign coordinator, stated:
The prime minister had three opportunities today to rule out cuts to the NHS, cuts to the state pension, or income tax increases to cover his completely unfunded £46 billion plan to abolish national insurance. It is deeply concerning that he deliberately chose not to do so.
At a time when Liz Truss has been highlighting the repercussions of unfunded Tory promises, the British public deserves answers. It is time for Rishi Sunak to be transparent and address the burning question on everyone’s mind: how does he intend to finance it?

Political enthusiasts typically enjoy general elections, but there is also a valid reason to dread them. When the policy discussion should be most enlightening, it often deteriorates.
