The astronomers noticed the system with VLT’s SPHERE instrument in 2019 and 2021 as a part of the B-star Exoplanet Abundance Study (BEAST).

They additionally seemed into archival knowledge and found that the b Centauri b planet had truly been imaged greater than 20 years in the past by ESO’s 3.6-m telescope, although it was not acknowledged as a planet on the time.
