Snapchat has introduced new safety measures to protect teenagers from potential “sextortion” scams. These measures include warning pop-ups for contact requests from unknown users, alerts for chats with reported users, and notifications for messages from unfamiliar locations. The app also now has enhanced blocking tools to prevent scammers from creating new accounts.
The company aims to safeguard teens from online threats and promote genuine connections among users. These features are crucial in combating the rise of “financial sextortion,” where scammers manipulate teens into sending explicit photos and extort money from them to prevent the images from being shared publicly.
According to Jacqueline Beauchere, Snapchat’s Global Head of Platform Safety, these updates are designed to enhance user safety and prevent exploitation on the platform. Law enforcement officials have noted an increase in sextortion cases, emphasizing the importance of protecting young users from online predators.
