Throughout development, Diablo 4 was known to be pulling its inspiration from Diablo 2 rather than Diablo 3 – and for good reason, as Diablo 2 was the most beloved entry in this diabolical series, but many have wondered just how similar the final product is. 23 years have passed since Diablo 2 was released, and obviously, a lot has changed in the video game industry as well as technology. With the recent remastered edition of Diablo 2 as well, players have had the game on their minds more lately than in quite some time, and the release of Diablo 4 only adds to the excitement.
Diablo 4 incorporates more of a classic feel with the series going back to its earlier thematic styles. Many fans of the franchise were a bit disheartened by Diablo 3 feeling more bright and cheery and changing many aspects such as the skill tree. Now, with the newly released entry in the series, Diablo 4 does feel quite a lot more like the second game and there are many similarities between them.
One of the most obvious connections between Diablo 4 and Diablo 2 is the return of the Sorcerer class. Although in Diablo 2 it was the Sorceress and limited to only being a female character, the class remains the same at its core. Diablo 3 featured a Wizard class that was supposedly a replacement for magic-wielding but was a very different type of class overall. Bringing the Sorcerer back for Diablo 4 immediately added a strong tie-in to the earlier games.
Lilith has long been a familiar face in the overall story of the Diablo franchise, yet she did not appear in Diablo 3. The Mother of Sanctuary becomes the key antagonist in Diablo 4 after awakening from the bonds which held her ever since the Pandemonium Event in Diablo 2. Although Diablo 3’s story remains invaluable lore to the world of Diablo, it is refreshing to see Lilith’s malevolent return.
A common complaint about Diablo 3 was that the combat mechanics in the game felt too simplified. In Diablo 4, battling mobs feels more impactful due to an increased need to use evasion combined with the animations of each character’s unique fighting style. Even the damage dealt to both the enemies and the player character plus the effects on the screen lend more of a sense of gravitas to combat that feels more in line with the battles in Diablo 2.
