CEOs from Meta, Snap, Discord, X, and TikTok faced a critical Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on child exploitation online. Mark Zuckerberg, Evan Spiegel, Jason Citron, Linda Yaccarino, and Shou Chew were questioned extensively by lawmakers about their child safety records.
This marked the first time Spiegel, Citron, and Yaccarino testified before Congress. All three were subpoenaed by the committee after initially refusing to appear voluntarily. Senator Dick Durbin highlighted that Citron only accepted the subpoena after US Marshals were dispatched to Discord’s headquarters at taxpayers’ expense.
The hearing room was emotional, with parents of children who had fallen victim to online exploitation on social media present. As the CEOs entered, audience members held up photos of their children. Durbin opened the hearing with a poignant video featuring child exploitation victims.
