The President of the International Chess Federation (FIDE), Arkady Dvorkovich, made an announcement regarding the temporary suspension of the Chess Federation of Russia (CFR) from FIDE membership. Additionally, Dvorkovich himself received a reprimand for his involvement in the CFR’s supervisory board.
“The Ethics Commission’s initial decision resulted in this action, known as a réprimand in ethical code terminology. This translates to ‘reprimand’ or ‘disapproval’ from French to Russian. Indeed, the reason behind this is my role in the CFR’s supervisory board,” explained Dvorkovich.
Discussing the CFR’s suspension, Dvorkovich mentioned:
“This decision, still pending enforcement, has faced disagreement from many FIDE council members. It is anticipated that this decision will be challenged, with the CFR pushing for a discussion at the FIDE general assembly in September this year. The assembly must address this crucial matter for the global chess community.”
The CFR’s membership suspension is anticipated to last for two years. This ruling followed a complaint from the Chess Federation of Ukraine regarding the CFR’s activities in recently annexed territories of Russia, as reported by “Kommersant.” Danish grandmaster Peter Heine Nielsen was among the first to bring this to light, claiming to be one of the instigators. Subsequently, CFR and FIDE confirmed the news.
