Advancements in Superconductors — Science News, March 16, 1974
Transition temperatures are steadily increasing. In 2018, scientists discovered that a compound of lanthanum and hydrogen exhibited signs of superconductivity at temperatures as low as -20° Celsius, marking the highest temperature for any superconductor (SN: 10/13/18, p. 6). However, the extreme pressure and cold conditions make these materials impractical for widespread use, prompting the ongoing search for a material that can superconduct at room temperature and closer to atmospheric pressure. Despite a debunked claim in 2023 for such a material, some scientists are advocating for new standards to identify superconductivity (SN: 12/16/23 & 12/30/23, p. 22).
