Enhancing battery life is crucial for maximizing‌ drone performance. While some drones can ⁢fly for 45 minutes⁤ or more on a single charge, extending flight time is essential for various⁣ applications. Researchers at the University of Southern Denmark have been tackling this challenge by creating drones that can recharge⁤ directly ⁢from power lines.

In their ⁤latest project, the team equipped a Tarot 650 Sport drone with a gripper ⁣system, customized ⁣with an electric quadcopter propulsion system, autopilot module, and other advanced components. When the drone’s battery is low, it utilizes its camera and millimeter-wave radar system‍ to locate the nearest power line.

Approaching the power line from below, the drone uses ⁣specially designed arms ⁢to guide the cable into the gripper. An inductive charger then draws power from⁢ the line, ensuring continuous operation. This innovative approach to recharging drones in mid-air opens up new possibilities for ⁢extended flight times and enhanced efficiency.
