Reviving an age-old AI debate with a fresh lab and paper release
Following Sam Altman’s departure from OpenAI in November 2023, a viral meme circulated within the AI community on social media. The meme questioned, “What did Ilya see?” in reference to Ilya Sutskever, a co-founder of the company. Speculations arose about a potential groundbreaking discovery at OpenAI that led to the creation of ChatGPT, causing Mr. Sutskever’s actions.
Despite Mr. Altman’s quick return to leadership and Mr. Sutskever expressing regret for his actions, the mystery of what Ilya witnessed lingered. In May, he departed from OpenAI, and on June 19th, he unveiled Safe Superintelligence (SSI), a new startup focused on developing superhuman AI. The team, including co-founders Daniel Gross and Daniel Levy, aims to advance AI capabilities without releasing any tangible products and has kept their investors anonymous.
