In a recent interview with CNBC, CEO Bob Jordan revealed that Southwest Airlines is exploring modifications to its single-class, open-seating cabins as part of a strategy to increase revenue. This potential change would mark a significant shift for the airline.
According to Jordan, “We are exploring new initiatives, such as reevaluating our seating and boarding procedures,” following the airline’s less-than-ideal first-quarter performance.
Southwest’s fleet consists entirely of Boeing 737 aircraft with a single economy class cabin and no assigned seating. However, the airline does offer early boarding options for a fee, allowing passengers to secure their preferred seats. The airline has long prioritized simplicity and ease of use in its offerings, striving to minimize costs and complexity.
