Research firms predict China’s Huawei will overcome US ban through the reintroduction of 5G phones

SHENZHEN, China (Reuters) – China’s Huawei Technologies is planning to make a comeback in the 5G smartphone industry by the end of this year, as per research firms. This indicates a resurgence after its consumer electronics business was severely impacted by a U.S. ban on equipment sales.

According to three third-party technology research firms that cover China’s smartphone sector and have access to industry sources including Huawei suppliers, Huawei should be able to obtain 5G chips domestically. They mentioned that Huawei will leverage its own advancements in semiconductor design tools and collaborate with Semiconductor Manufacturing International Co (SMIC) for chipmaking. However, these firms spoke on the condition of anonymity due to confidentiality agreements with their clients.

Huawei declined to comment on this matter, while SMIC did not respond to a request for comment.
