New legislation supporting build-to-rent initiatives introduced

Assistant Treasurer Stephen Jones has presented new tax laws in the house to encourage investment in the build-to-rent scheme.

Build-to-rent projects are tailored for rental purposes rather‍ than individual sales, a model the Albanese ⁢government believes has been successful overseas in boosting housing supply.

Jim Chalmers and Julie Collins highlight‌ that the⁢ incentives will be applicable to build-to-rent projects⁣ with 50 or more⁣ apartments available for public rent.

These dwellings must remain under single ownership for at least 15 years, with a minimum of 10% allocated for affordable tenancies.

The incentives cover new projects that⁣ commenced construction after the policy announcement in last ⁢year’s budget.

This legislation operates independently from state and ⁢territory⁤ initiatives supporting the build-to-rent sector.

Research‍ on build-to-rent programs suggests it may not be a⁢ complete solution to Australia’s rental crisis.
