Washington, D.C.’s Chinatown has seen a decline in its Chinese population, with only a few hundred remaining due to rising rents and luxury developments. Penny and Jack Lee, who grew up in the neighborhood during the 1960s and 1970s, remember a vibrant community where they felt safe. However, the construction of a convention center in 1982 and the MCI Center in 1997 caused many residents to be displaced and forced businesses to close. The resulting rise in rents pushed many to move to cheaper and safer areas. Today, only a few hundred people of Chinese heritage remain in the neighborhood.
