Qatar’s Prime Minister Urges Full Implementation of Gaza Ceasefire Accord

Prime Minister Sheikh⁢ Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani ⁤of Qatar is urging for the full implementation‍ of the initial phase of the Gaza ceasefire agreement and expresses optimism for a conclusive⁤ next phase.

During an exclusive⁣ interview with Al Jazeera, ⁤Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani emphasized the need for⁣ a ⁤binding resolution⁣ from the UN Security Council to ensure ‌compliance ⁣with the ceasefire agreement.

A trilateral deal involving Qatar, Egypt, ⁢and the United States ‌was announced⁤ on ⁢Wednesday, signaling a multi-phased approach to end hostilities in ‍Gaza and facilitate an exchange⁣ of captives⁤ between Hamas and⁣ Israel.

The ceasefire‌ in Gaza is set to commence on Sunday, marking‍ the beginning of a seven-week‍ period that includes increased humanitarian aid, gradual‍ Israeli⁢ troop withdrawal, and a swap of captives. The subsequent phase is slated‍ for March pending successful execution of phase one as per Israel’s expectations.

The Israeli cabinet is scheduled to approve the ceasefire pact later today.

Reporting from Amman, Jordan, journalist Stefanie Dekker mentioned that ‍discussions are underway within the Israeli government regarding this matter.

“The meeting was ‍originally planned for Saturday but has been expedited‌ due to pressure from ‌mediators,” she ⁢explained.

Sheikh Mohammed acknowledged‌ Qatar’s significant role alongside Egypt as‍ mediators during peace negotiations. He credited both outgoing⁢ Biden administration officials⁣ and‌ incoming ⁤President-elect⁣ Donald Trump’s team for their pivotal ⁢contributions towards achieving this breakthrough in Gaza.

However, he clarified ⁤that Qatar‍ acts solely as a mediator and emphasized that post-war ⁢governance in⁤ Gaza remains an‌ internal Palestinian affair.
