According to Russian President Vladimir Putin, the Russian military plane that crashed near the Ukrainian border was shot down by Ukrainian air defenses. Putin’s first comments about the crash indicated that Moscow’s investigation results would be released in two to three days, with preliminary findings suggesting that American or French missiles were responsible for the plane’s downing.
Putin also accused Ukraine of being aware that the Ilyushin Il-76 plane was carrying 65 Ukrainian prisoners of war. He stated in televised comments on Friday that it was unclear whether the action was intentional or accidental, but it was undeniably a crime.
The Russian defense ministry reported that the flight was carrying six Russian crew members and three soldiers for the latest prisoner swap with Ukraine.
