Proposed Legislation Seeks to Hold Tech Companies Accountable by Revising Section 230 Protections


Lawmakers ‌from different political backgrounds are joining forces to propose ‍the sunset of Section 230 of ‍the Communications⁤ Decency Act, citing ⁢its obsolescence. House ⁣Energy and Commerce Committee⁢ Chair Cathy McMorris ‌Rodgers⁢ and ranking member Frank Pallone, Jr. have unveiled a bipartisan‍ draft⁣ legislation for their bill, aiming to nullify the provision by ‌December 31, 2025. In an op-ed⁢ for The Wall Street Journal, they acknowledged Section 230’s ⁣role⁢ in shaping ⁤the⁣ internet but criticized tech giants for exploiting it ⁢to evade accountability ⁢for the harm caused by their platforms, particularly to⁤ children.
