Get ready for what could be the most active hurricane season America has ever seen!
Miami-Dade County Mayor DANIELLA LEVINE CAVA steps up to the podium with a knowing smile. “It’s that time of year,” she announces. While it could be mistaken for the end of the school year or the start of a new reality TV season, she’s actually referring to the upcoming hurricane season, set to kick off on June 1st with record-breaking expectations.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is forecasting a staggering 17 to 25 named storms, with eight to 13 potentially becoming hurricanes and four to seven classified as “major hurricanes” with winds exceeding 111mph (179kph). This surpasses the average of 14 named storms and three major hurricanes seen between 1991 and 2020. This prediction marks the highest number of storms ever forecasted by the agency in May. Other experts are in agreement. The message from weather and emergency officials is clear: “be prepared”.
