Article from www.cnn.com On Friday August 16th a devastating suicide bomb blast occurred in a mosque in Darra Adam Khel in Peshawar, Pakistan, resulting in the death of more than 92 people, including women and children, and injuring more than 110. The mosque, located in the tribal area of Pakistan, was packed to capacity when the explosive device detonated. This tragedy is the worst in Pakistan since a bombing in Mastung near Quetta in April that killed more than 150 people, and has been condemned as a heinous attack.
The explosion occurred as worshippers gathered for Friday prayer and the death toll is expected to rise. The detonation was so powerful that it was heard up to four kilometers away. Rescue operations were immediately in motion for those injured in the attack, and ambulances and military helicopters were sent to the area to assist in providing medical aid. The Army chief of staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa visited the site and said the “Pakistan Army stands in solidarity with families of the victims”.
No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack and the investigation is still underway. However, it is suspected that the blast was a suicide bombing carried out by a militant group. The attack once again emphasizes Pakistan’s vulnerability to terrorism and highlights the need for the government and military to intensify efforts to counter such hostile activities and bring about peace and security to the nation.
At this point in time, the Pakistani people can only grieve for the loved ones lost and pray for the quick recovery of those injured as they face yet another tragedy in their homeland.
