OpenAI is reportedly considering the development of its own artificial intelligence chips to power ChatGPT. The company is exploring the possibility of creating its own chips and has even evaluated potential acquisition options. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has previously highlighted GPU shortages as a concern for users in terms of speed and reliability, making the acquisition of more AI chips a priority.
In addition to addressing GPU shortages, OpenAI’s use of its own chips could help manage the costs associated with running its products. An analysis by Stacy Rasgon from Bernstein Research estimates that each ChatGPT query costs the company around 4 cents.
