Reuters reports that OpenAI is considering the development of its own artificial intelligence chips and is even exploring the possibility of acquiring them. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman previously attributed concerns about the speed and reliability of the company’s API to GPU shortages, which has prompted these actions. By using its own chips, OpenAI could also reduce costs. According to analysis by Bernstein Research, each ChatGPT query currently costs the company approximately four cents.
Currently, NVIDIA dominates the market for AI application chips. For example, the Microsoft supercomputer used by OpenAI for technology development relies on 10,000 NVIDIA GPUs. Microsoft, OpenAI’s largest supporter, has been working on its own AI chip since 2019.
