The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) has responded to the US allegations regarding the potential use of chemical weapons by Russia in Ukraine. In a statement dated May 7, the OPCW mentioned that the information provided by both parties, including data available to the OPCW Secretariat, lacks sufficient evidence.
On May 1, the United States accused Russia of using chemical weapons during the conflict with Ukraine. This accusation was made in a communication from the US State Department announcing new sanctions against Russia.
The claim was that Russian military personnel deployed the chemical agent chloropicrin against the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Chloropicrin is on the OPCW blacklist due to its irritant and suffocating effects, although it is not a nerve agent. There are also concerns that Russian troops may use other substances similar to those used by law enforcement to control protests.
Reports from the Ukrainian Armed Forces have indicated multiple instances of Russian troops using chemical substances in combat. However, it has not been confirmed whether these substances resulted in fatalities or severe consequences.
