The Nintendo Switch‘s successor has reportedly been unveiled and has the potential to exceed expectations. Despite the immense success of Nintendo’s hybrid console, which has sold over 125 million units since its launch, there have been rumors and speculation about the release of a potential Switch 2 — or whatever name Nintendo decides to give it. This is especially significant considering that the Switch was launched over six years ago in March 2017.
Several claims suggested that the new console would be released in 2024, and Nintendo had already begun negotiations with suppliers for its production. This predicted timeline seemed to be supported by Nintendo’s fiscal year-end results in May 2023. Subsequently, reports emerged that dev kits had been manufactured and distributed to select studios. It was also rumored that Nintendo would opt for an LCD screen, similar to its current handheld peers, instead of the vibrant OLED screen found in its latest Switch, in order to reduce costs and focus on performance and visuals.
According to Eurogamer, Nintendo had a presence at the Cologne-based event Gamescom, where it showcased titles such as Pikmin 4 and Super Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. However, the company also held closed-door developer presentations for its new console. During these presentations, select partners were shown tech demos that demonstrated the system’s capabilities. One of these demos featured an enhanced version of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, one of the Switch’s launch titles.
The purpose of this presentation was to highlight the differences between Nintendo’s current console and its future offerings. The demo showcased higher frame rates and resolutions. It is important to note that this was only a demo and does not necessarily indicate that the acclaimed 2017 Zelda title will be re-released on the new device.
VGC, citing its own sources, corroborated these reports and claimed that part of Nintendo’s demonstration included running Unreal Engine 5’s The Matrix Awakens tech demo on the new device. This achieved visuals comparable to those of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, thanks to Nvidia’s AI upscaling technology: DLSS. While this does not guarantee that the next Nintendo device will be as powerful as Sony and Microsoft’s consoles, it is a promising development that suggests improved visuals for the next Switch.
