International rights groups have stated that the Israeli strikes, which resulted in the death of a journalist and injuries to six others in southern Lebanon, are likely to be a direct attack on civilians and should be investigated as a war crime.
Separate investigations conducted by Human Rights Watch (HRW) and Amnesty International have concluded that on October 13, Israel’s military fired artillery shells at journalists near the border, indicating targeted attacks on civilians.
The attacks resulted in the death of Reuters journalist Issam Abdallah and injuries to six other journalists, including Al Jazeera cameraperson Elie Brakhia and reporter Carmen Joukhadar.
HRW has stated that the evidence suggests that the Israeli military was aware or should have been aware that the individuals they were targeting were civilians, thus making the attack a war crime.
