Newly Uncovered Malware by ESET Reveals FSB’s Espionage Tactics Targeting Western Diplomatic Institutions

A European country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs fell victim to Russian hackers who installed two ‌new backdoors, LunarWeb and LunarMail, as discovered by Slovak cybersecurity company ESET.

Experts believe that the notorious hacking group Turla, linked‌ to the FSB, is responsible ‌for these breaches. ⁢Turla is known‌ for targeting government and ⁢diplomatic⁤ entities across Europe, Central Asia, and the Middle East.

Further investigations revealed ‌that three‌ diplomatic offices ⁣of the same foreign ministry in ⁢the Middle East were also compromised with similar backdoors, actively used since early 2020.

Last year, the US Justice Department disclosed an FBI operation uncovering the Snake malware infecting⁢ global networks ⁤for cyber espionage, orchestrated by the Turla group and the‌ 16th FSB Center of‍ Russia.
