A well-known journalist, writer, and mother of journalist Vasily Polonsky, Nadia Kevorkova, has been placed in pre-trial detention for two months on charges of justifying terrorism. This decision will keep her behind bars until July 6.
Several prominent individuals, including journalists Eva Merkacheva, Alexander Prokhanov, and Maxim Shevchenko, as well as lawyer Ekaterina Gordon and Marat Kabaev, the father of gymnast Alina Kabaeva, have vouched for her character.
Kevorkova faces charges related to two separate incidents. The first involves the publication of a text by the late journalist Orkhan Dzhemal in her Telegram channel in 2018, discussing the Nalchik attack in 2010. The second incident pertains to her alleged justification of the “Taliban”, a group considered a terrorist organization in Russia.
Her lawyer, Kaloy Akhilgov, emphasized that the Russian authorities themselves have not classified the “Taliban” as a terrorist organization. He pointed out that high-ranking officials, including the Special Representative of the President in Afghanistan, Zamir Kabulov, have refrained from labeling the group as such.
Despite the accusations, Kevorkova maintains her innocence. During the recent court hearing, her defense team requested to present a list of quotes from official sources regarding the “Taliban”. However, the judge did not allow the quotes to be read without proper documentation.
