Microsoft is urging businesses to embrace Microsoft 365 Copilot, but some customers are concerned about the AI assistant’s tendency to reveal confidential information. To combat this issue, Microsoft introduced new tools at its recent Ignite event, including enhancements in SharePoint Advanced Management and Purview, as well as a guide for deploying the generative AI (genAI) assistant.
According to Jennifer Glenn, research director at IDC’s Security and Trust Group, data security professionals are worried about Copilot’s access to sensitive data due to its widespread use in enterprises. The new data governance and security features from Microsoft aim to alleviate these concerns and build trust in utilizing AI tools like Copilot.
M365 Copilot excels at analyzing vast amounts of corporate data to provide users with relevant information sourced from various M365 platforms like Word documents, emails, and Teams messages. However, the downside is that it can also retrieve sensitive files that should be restricted.
Some organizations have experienced instances where employees inadvertently accessed confidential data through Copilot’s responses, including payroll details, legal documents, and proprietary business strategies. Alex Pozin from Microsoft emphasized the importance of addressing oversharing to prevent such incidents.
