A Philippine courtroom on Wednesday acquitted Nobel laureate Maria Ressa of tax evasion expenses, ending years of authorized hearings towards the veteran Filipino-American journalist that she says have been politically motivated.

Ressa, CEO and founding father of information website Rappler and a former CNN bureau chief, was cleared of 4 counts of tax violations filed in 2018 by former President Rodrigo Duterte’s authorities, an official from the Court of Tax Appeals confirmed to CNN.

“Today, facts win, truth wins, justice wins,” Ressa mentioned Wednesday exterior the courtroom in Manila.

“These charges were politically motivated,” she added, calling them, “A brazen abuse of power and meant to stop journalists from doing their jobs.”
